Our Social and Emotional Well Being team cover a wide range of services/needs for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community.

We are fortunate to engage the services of psychologist Daryl Hobbs (BAppSc Psych(Hons), MPsych, MAPS) two days a week. He works alongside the Social and Emotional Well Being team and has a focus on Trauma care. We can assist with appointments and can sit in if required.

Our intake process is completed in a culturally safe environment, outlining the support and services you require and setting goals with your Support Worker.

Ngootyoong Mara Healing Centre

Based in Julia Street of Portland, the Ngootyoong Mara Cultural Healing Centre aims to promote culturally focused activities and gatherings and is the hub for our Social and Emotional Well Being team and their programs.

Referrals and Intake

You can self-refer, reaching out to our team when you feel you need assistance. You may also be referred by other service providers or families to our Programs.
The intake process is completed with the aid of our SEWB team, outlining the support and services available to you and setting goals you aim to achieve with your Support Worker.

The intake process is completed in a culturally safe environment and can then assess what needs or interventions are required.

WELL WOMEN AND THEIR CHILDREN’S HEALTH (WWATCH)​

Our passionate and experienced WWATCH team aim to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of mothers and their children through empowerment, education, and self-development.

The Well Women and Their Children’s Health Program is a Community driven initiative developed from discussions with Elders about their concerns regarding the wellbeing of women and children in the Community. Closing the gap in health by improving the physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of mothers and their children.

The WWATCH program provides a culturally safe and confidential support service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women and Their Children. Support is also provided to non-Indigenous women with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children.

  • Justice System / Corrections
  • Department of Health & Human Services

Mental Health/ Youth Mental Health

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in everyday life and its often good to have someone to yarn before a problem escalates. We can assist with techniques to better help you understand what you are going through, along with referrals to GP’s, psychologists, and other health professionals.

Our Youth mental Health program works with the community aged up to 18yrs and offers a flexible delivery service that can be delivered at school, home, or our offices. We can assist in building a range of coping strategies so to enable clients to better deal with a person’s social or family environment.

Alcohol & Other Drugs Program (AOD)

Our AOD (Alcohol and Other Drug) program aids in the support and guidance for those affected by alcohol and drug use, at any stage.

When you find yourself unable to control your alcohol or other drugs, it may be time to speak to our AOD team. We take a holistic, person-centred approach to educate to try and reduce harm to yourself and others.  Our intake process is completed in a culturally safe environment, and we can assess what needs or interventions are required.

Thookay-Tya Keerna-Ke Playgroup

The Thookay-Tya Keerna-Ke (Children Gathering) Playgroup allows children and their families to come together in a safe environment to laugh, play and learn while staying culturally focused with in-language songs and activities.

This also includes:

Koori Youth Program

The program allows the kids to engage in the community and develop their social relationships.

Justice

Our Justice committee at DWECH is strongly involved with the support of Indigenous community members who become involved with the law and justice system.
